General Biomass – CHP-plant with ORC-Technology A biomass CHP allows by cogeneration an environmentally friendly and almost CO2-neutral heat and power generation. The production of electrical energy using renewable energy sources such as biomass is a declared environmental and in terms of energy policy objective of the governments of the European Union. Subject to the energy feed-in law and biomass regulation of the Federal Republic of Germany the feed-in rates are defined according to the power levels up to 0.5 MW, 5 MW and 20 MW electric power. ORC-Technology The energy from biomass can be used with the ORC-Technology in decentralized electric power plants and produce energy and heat. The ORC-process (“Organic Rankine Cycle”) is based on a water-vapour process similar method with the difference that instead of water an organic working fluid (silicone oil) is used. Through a thermal oil boiler the produced heat by the biomass furnace is trans- formed to the ORC-process. Thermal oil is used as a heat transfer medium The required temperature of 320°C for an ORC process can be achieved by that. The used organic medium evaporates through the transferred heat from the ther- mal oil to the ORC process. The steam is led to a slow running turbine, in which it produces mechanical work through expansion, and that produces electrical energy in the generator, which is directly coupled to the turbine. The expanded steam is led to a regenerator in order to produce heat, which increases the electrical efficiency. Afterwards the working steam runs to the condensator. The heat, that is generated there, can be used as thermal or process heat. The condensate is returned to a pump and there it is getting the operating pressure. The ORC-cycle is closed.
