ElectraTherm Technology Green Machine for power systems How Green Machine works ElectraTherm’s heat-to-power systems utilizes the closed loop Organic Rankin Cycle (ORC). Its principle is similar to that of a conventional steam engine where water is boiled and vaporized and consequently transformed into mechanical energy. The ORC utilizes redundant heat for heating the working fluid to boiling point and transforming it into vapour. Steps in the process: 1. Heat is captured by the evaporator, heats the working fluid to boiling point and transforms it into vapour. 2. Thevapourisforcedthroughthescrewexpanderthattransformsthe energy of the vapour into mechanical energy. 3. Thevapouriscooledbyacoldwatersourceandcondensesbackinto liquid in the condenser. 4. Theworkingfluidispumpedbacktotheevaporator.Thentheprocess repeats. Evaporator Preheater Heated pressurised vapour ORC refrigerant loop Pump Expansion of pressurised vapour produces power. Generator rotation produces electricity. Twin screw Generator expander Low-pressure vapour Condenser Low-pressure liquid ElectraTherm’s twin screw expander offers distinct advantages for small-scale ORC’s. These advantages include simple design, low speed operation, 3:1 turn down ratio, no gear box or oil pump, attractive payback and proven technology. ElectraTherm’s Green Machine represents a dramatic change from ORC designs based on the expansion of vapour in the turbine into screw expanders, and generates emission-free electricity from existing unused heat without added fuel. The design life of the systems is 20 years, while almost no maintenance is required.
