projects have been directed to proving there is reservoir capacity and geothermal fluid flow potential to sustain commercial scale power projects. To assist in resolving these issues Green Rock Energy is participating in GIA Annexes III (Enhanced Geothermal Systems), VII (Advanced Geothermal Drilling Techniques) and Annex VIII (Direct Uses). 25.1 Mid-West Geothermal Power Project, North Perth Basin, Western Australia Due to the difficulty the Company found in the past year of funding direct use geothermal projects in Australia, Green Rock shifted its focus from direct heat projects in the central Perth Basin to concentrate on electricity production from hot sedimentary aquifers in the northern Perth Basin where heat flows are known to be the highest in the Basin and in places exceed 100 mW/m2. The Perth Basin is a 1,000 km long extensional rift or half graben containing a thick pile of sediments in places over 15 km deep. Green Rock holds seven Permits (known as the Mid-West Geothermal Project) occupying 2,094 km2 in the north Perth Basin where there is good geological resource potential for power generation. These Permits are located near oil and gas fields close to power infrastructure and in a region with rapid growth in power demand. The Mid-West region has the fastest growing power demand in the State. Development of magnetite iron ore mining and processing will require several hundreds of MWe, and potentially over 1 GWe of baseload electricity supply in the next 5-10 years. In 2011, Green Rock and leading Australian renewable energy company Pacific Hydro entered into a binding Memorandum of Understanding to work together to develop power projects based on geothermal exploration permits and licences held by the companies in the North Perth Basin in WA and the Great Artesian Basin in SA. Prior to this year, exploration for geothermal resources was directed to mapping the regions in the Permits with sedimentary successions having the highest heat flows as shown by existing petroleum wells and water bores. The highest known heat flows in the Perth Basin, averaging above 90 mW/m2, have been determined from petroleum wells in or near producing oil and gas fields in Green Rock‘s Permits in the north Perth Basin. There are 132 petroleum wells in the Permits, including 39 where the temperature in sediments is estimated to be over 150 °C at depths less than 3,500 m. This temperature is sufficient to generate electricity commercially, provided that sufficient geothermal water recovery flow rates can be achieved. During the year, the Company concentrated on mapping the distribution of natural permeability within these regions of highest heat flows with a view to selecting suitable drilling locations near existing power transmission lines for easy access to market. This work involved analysis of 3-D seismic in these regions to map geological stratigraphy, structure and natural fracture patterns, analysis of data from petroleum wells to detect open fractures in relation to the existing structures and stratigraphy and the sub-surface stress field, and collaboration in an MT research survey with the IESE at University of Auckland and Adelaide University. Green Rock is cooperating with other petroleum and geothermal companies which are actively exploring in the Perth Basin for oil and tight gas and shale gas to form a consortium to secure a suitable drilling rig for drilling wells in mid-2012.
