24.3 Review of Active Geothermal Projects and Their Status During 2010, there have been advances in 2 Petratherm España projects: High temperature geothermal energy project in the Canary Islands- Over the last year engineering design and environmental queries have been carried out relating to the first geothermal drilling to be performed on the island of Tenerife. The geothermal drilling is expected to be executed in 2012. Geothermal district heating network project in Madrid- This project is only waiting for the necessary funding to start its development phase. During the past year, the economic parameters of number of end users, dimensions of heat network, etc., have been adjusted to make the project more competitive with natural gas, which is the cheapest solution in the market today. Regarding the Spanish shallow geothermal sector, the sector continues to grow in spite of the financial crisis situation in Spain. 24.4 Planned Activities for 2011 and Beyond The APPA Geothermal Department (Low and High Enthalpy) will continue working on the key aspects that will enable the development of geothermal energy in our country in agreement with the objectives considered. These aspects are: Monitoring the implementation of the Spanish Renewable Energy Plan (PER) 2011-2020 through new legislation Determining the manner in which existing geothermal resources can be harnessed in a technically and economically viable way, something that will only be achieved through the technological development of the strategic areas that comprise a geothermal project (basic investigation, subsurface investigation and resource management and optimizing geothermal energy at the surface) Cost reduction of geothermal circuit Improving ground evaluation methods and increasing well, well field and ground heat exchange system productivity Increasing the efficiency of energy generation equipment Developing competitive, low temperature emission systems Developing building retrofitting systems that enable transition from high temperature single boiler-radiator combinations to shallow geothermal energy based systems Standardizing the use of geothermal systems in buildings, especially hybrid geothermal heating-solar regeneration ones, as well as those combining heating and cooling Measures and actions that can favour the legal and economic regimes that make up the regulatory framework governing geothermal energy. Such recommendations would also contemplate the inclusion of any norms necessary to achieve a successful development of the sector so it can undergo solid and well-structured growth Also, the High Enthalpy APPA Geothermal Department is going to participate in a 30-month EU project called GEOELEC- Develop Geothermal Electricity in Europe to have a renewable energy mix. The project, coordinated by European Geothermal Energy Council (EGEC), is part of the Intelligent Energy for Europe Programme (IEE).
