A chapter for geothermal energy in the new Spanish Renewable Energy Plan (PER) 2011- 2020 for the first time in history, as an emerging technology in the coming years The establishment in the PER 2011-2020 Plan of a series of measures to boost geothermal and other emerging technologies Geothermal‘s probable inclusion in the Law on Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy to achieve the objectives of the European Directive on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources (Directive 2009/28/CE) Geothermal‘s probable inclusion on CALENER (software for qualifying energy efficiency in buildings). Regarding the field of heating and cooling, major efforts are being made by some Government and other agencies to train and inform professionals in the sector. Another type of support that this energy is receiving in our country is the financial help. The grants that reduce the extra cost of this technology make it be more acceptable, which is helping its integration in buildings. Also in 2010, the Institute for Diversification and Saving of Energy (IDAE) released the program for financing geothermal projects through energy service companies, called GEOTCASA. The target of GEOTCASA is to promote setting up a quality offer, adapted to the needs of potential users for the use of geothermal energy. Regarding the topic of electricity generation, more than 50 research permits have been obtained by entrepreneurs throughout Spain, as a consequence of geothermal electricity generation being 100% dispatchable. 24.2 Status of Organization‘s Geothermal Activities in 2010 In 2010, the APPA Geothermal Department (Low and High Enthalpy) worked on key aspects that will enable the development of geothermal energy in our country in agreement with the objectives considered. These aspects are: Promotion of geothermal energy through its inclusion in the new 2011-2020 Spanish Renewable Energy Plan (PER) and National Action Plan with the adoption of precise regulatory measures and the definition of pilot programs Updating and permanent management of the knowledge pertaining to the Spanish geothermal potential Development of RD&D programs that are adapted to the particularities of the sector in Spain, aimed at strengthening the innovation capacity through facilitating significant reductions in generation costs and increasing system efficiencies Development of training and certification model that covers the different spheres of geothermal energy A number of different barriers have hindered the implementation of high and low enthalpy geothermal technology. Lower thermal demand and energy costs in Spain explain part of our lagging behind other countries. The APPA Geothermal Department (Low and High Enthalpy) has worked in this direction to achieve increased investment in low enthalpy geothermal energy so as to enable the development of projects that are economically viable, with the goal of reaching maturity in the sector. APPA has also attempted to show to different government bodies that high enthalpy geothermal can play a significant role on the Spanish energy mix if the support mechanisms are implemented within the next years and are included on the new renewable energy regional and national plans. 274PDF Image | Geothermal Research and Tech IEA
