At the beginning of 2007 APPA set up the High Enthalpy Geothermal Department, and since 2008, a Low Enthalpy Geothermal Department. The creation of both departments is a result of the interest shown by private entities in the Spanish geothermal potential. Now the High Enthalpy Geothermal Department has 9 companies as members and the Low Enthalpy Geothermal Department has 18. 24.0.2 MissionStatementandStrategicObjectives According to APPA companies these are the strategic objectives broken down for both departments: Low Enthalpy Geothermal Department objectives: High To boost and to spread geothermal technologies in Institutions To coordinate the different Spanish Autonomous Regions with the aim they have similar requirements To contact with other European associations To normalize the different types of implementation technologies To make geothermal energy attractive to electricity companies and electricity consumers To contribute in a positive way to electricity demand Enthalpy Geothermal Department objectives: To study Spanish geothermal resources status To define basic exploration lines to improve the resource knowledge To define specific investigation lines, feed-in tariffs and financing mechanisms to make geothermal business attractive in Spain To study the legal framework applicable to the geothermal development Spanish Geothermal 2020 objectives 24.1 Highlights for 2010 In Spain, there are around 150 MWth installed in geothermal heat pumps (GHP), which is not much compared with the major geothermal potential that exists in Spain for both deep (medium and high temperature) and shallow geothermal (low temperature) resources, and with the information provided by other European countries with similar or even lower potential. However, the geothermal sector forecasts point to a rapidly growing market and a future in Spain that may be flourishing in the coming years. In 2010, the Spanish industry made a commendable effort to include geothermal energy as an alternative among other renewable technologies.
