In 2010, there were also efforts to establish a group representing the geothermal research community in Canada that ended in the establishment of the Canadian Geothermal Research Council (CanGRC) in the summer of 2011, supported by CanGEA (see their website: www.cangea.ca for more information). 22.9 International Cooperative Activities The Canadian geothermal industry was active in a number of international conferences and summits in 2010, and also hosted the Third Annual Geothermal Conference in Vancouver in August 2010. CanGEA further hosted national events in Calgary, Toronto and a federal policy forum in the country‘s capital Ottawa. CanGEA also held a reception as part of the World Geothermal Congress in Bali, Indonesia in the spring of 2010. Going forward the Canadian geothermal industry will continue to leverage the experience and developments of more progressive nations to help foster the development of Canada‘s domestic geothermal resources. CanGEA also increased its efforts on cooperating with other industry associations representing the geothermal energy industry, e.g., in the United States, Chile, Australia, the EU, and other countries. This led to the creation of the International Geothermal Business Coalition in early 2011. Furthermore, the Geothermal Reporting Code saw the Canadian and Australian industries work closely together. 22.10 Future Outlook With the continued disinterest by the federal government and the lack of funding, current development will continue but lack the big leap forward to larger scale geothermal projects. But with the current pilot projects in development, the industry is on the verge of producing geothermal power in Canada, which could dramatically change the picture and prospects for 2011 and beyond. With the current interest by Canadian oil and gas players in the industry and development outside of Canada, interest into Canadian development could be around the corner. We do not expect the industry reaching the first milestone in bringing geothermal power to the country very soon, but 2012 could see at least one if not two small-scale power and combined heat and power plants coming online. Development in Canada will also be dependent on the interest by the financial market. So while 2010 has been a positive year for raising money on Canadian stock exchanges for the industry, 2011 as a whole will be seen as an annus horribilis. With so many Canadian players now active internationally, it is only a matter of time until there will be enough interest in utilizing the know-how and expertise in Canada. We expect that the next two years will be a turnaround for the industry and will kick-start development activities. 22.11 References and Websites CanadianGeothermalEnergyAssocation(CanGEA): www.cangea.ca Geological Survey of Canada (Natural Resources Canada): http://gsc.nrcan.gc.ca/index_e.php Canadian Geothermal Research Council (CanGRC): www.cangrc.ca Canadian GeoExchange Coalition (CGC): www.geo-exchange.ca/en/ 266PDF Image | Geothermal Research and Tech IEA
