In addition, the GRC periodically schedules a basic introductory course about geothermal resources and development. 21.8.3 GeothermalEnergyAssociation The Geothermal Energy Association (GEA) is a trade association of U.S. companies supporting the expanded use of geothermal energy and developing geothermal resources for electrical power generation and direct-heat uses. In order to achieve this goal, the GEA advocates for public policies that will promote the development and utilization of geothermal resources, provides a forum for the industry, encourages research and development, presents industry views to governmental organizations, provides assistance for the export of geothermal goods and services, compiles statistical data about the industry and conducts education and outreach projects. 21.9 International Cooperative Activities In 2008, DOE signed the International Partnership for Geothermal Technology (IPGT) with Iceland and Australia. The IPGT continued its work in 2009 with the establishment of six working groups in technical areas: lower cost drilling; stimulation procedures; exploration technologies; high temperature tools; zonal isolation and packers; and reservoir modeling. In 2010, the U.S. signed a bilateral agreement with Iceland and Switzerland joined the IPGT. In addition, the U.S. has a collaborative project (Joint Seismic-Electromagnetics Inversion for Iceland Geothermal Systems) underway between Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, ÍSOR (Iceland GeoSurvey), Reykjavic University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. 21.10 References (1) Williams et al., 2008.
