Addressing market barriers to increase the deployment of ground source heat pumps Addressing authorizations not previously funded under the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA) Successful development and deployment of EGS technologies will set the stage for a nationwide expansion of geothermal energy deployment. While high-temperature resources offer long-term benefits, near-term gains in geothermal expansion will come from co-produced fluids and the deployment of low temperature technologies to reach resources once considered non-economical. Additionally, an emphasis on the development of exploration technologies will aid in the development of more hidden hydrothermal resources in the near-term. 21.1 Major Highlights and Achievements from 2010 U.S. Geothermal Energy Capacity Grew 6% in 2009- Geothermal energy capacity expanded six percent in the U.S. in 2009, due to six new geothermal plants which came online, adding 176.68 megawatts (MWe). Three projects came into service in Nevada, with one apiece in California, Oregon, and Utah. The total online capacity in the U.S. reached 3,152.72 MWe as of August 2009, according to the Geothermal Energy Association (GEA), an industry trade association (2). DOE Offers Loan Guarantees to Geothermal Projects in Nevada and Oregon- On June 15, 2011, DOE offered loan guarantees for geothermal power projects located in northwestern Nevada and southeastern Oregon, drawing on funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. In Nevada, DOE announced a conditional commitment to provide a partial guarantee for a US$ 98.5 million loan to the Nevada Geothermal Power Company (NGP). The company is the developer of Faulkner 1, a 49.5 megawatt (MWe) geothermal power project at NGP's Blue Mountain site in northwestern Nevada. In Oregon, DOE announced the offer of a US$ 102.2 million conditional commitment for a loan guarantee to U.S. Geothermal, Inc. to construct a 22 MWe power plant. The project could be the first commercial geothermal power plant in the state, and the electricity generated will be sold to Idaho Power Company under a long-term power purchase agreement. The project will use an improved technology to extract energy from the geothermal hot water more efficiently. DOE-Backed Project Demonstrates Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS) Technology- On June 8, 2010, two geothermal companies, AltaRock Energy and Davenport Newberry, announced plans to conduct a demonstration of enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) technology at a site located near Bend, Oregon. The purpose of this project is to extract energy from an underground "hot spot" in the Earth's crust by creating an underground reservoir of water near the hot spot. The demonstration is taking place on an existing federal lease located outside the Newberry National Volcanic Monument, about 30 miles south of Bend. The companies seek to extract energy from the Newberry Volcano, a 500 mi2 dormant volcano with a magma chamber thought to lie only 1-3 miles below the surface. Backed by a recent DOE grant of US$ 21.45 million in ARRA funds, as well as US$ 22.36 million from the AltaRock-Davenport partnership, the project also benefits from the research efforts of faculty and students at several universities, as well as scientists from DOE's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the U.S. Geological Survey (3).
