project for combined heat and power generation has been set up that from 2012/13 would generate power and deliver heat to existing and planned district heating systems of nearby villages. St. Gallen: In the first quarter of 2010, the city of St. Gallen, in the North-East of Switzerland, performed a 3-D reflection seismic survey. The results will be used to define the target areas for siting a geothermal heat and power project. In November 2010, the citizens of St. Gallen accepted, with a majority of 80%, a credit of 159 million CHF (US$ 200 million) for the realization of the geothermal power and heating plant, and the extension of the district heating system. Drilling operations are expected to start in early 2012 (Figure 20.4, Chapter photo). A number of additional cities and communities continue project maturation efforts to develop resources located in the Swiss Molasse Basin. Enhanced geothermal systems (EGS): The Basel site has been shut down and secured. No further development is currently planned. GEOTHERM- a large scale R&D program (www.cces.ethz.ch/projects/nature/geotherm) devoted to engineered (or enhanced) geothermal systems: The development of this technology to maturity would allow geothermal to make a significant contribution to the global energy mix. GEOTHERM comprises five modules: reservoir geomechanics, microseismicity studies of the permeability creation process and seismic hazard, development of a hydro-thermal-mechanical- chemical coupled numerical code for reservoir simulation, fluid-rock interaction, and optimal use of geothermal resources in an urban environment. The project was conceived as providing basic scientific support to the Basel EGS project. In addition, Swiss researchers continue to work at, and contribute to, the EGS project at Soultz. For more information on the R&D program of the Swiss Federal Office of Energy please refer to http://www.bfe.admin.ch/forschunggeothermie/02484/index.html?lang=de In addition, Swiss universities and small and medium-sized enterprises participate in R&D programs that are publicly funded by foreign jurisdictions (e.g., GEISER funded by the European Commission‘s 7th EU Framework Program, and R&D related to EGS funded by the US-American Department of Energy). 20.8.3 Industry Funded R&D into Geothermal Energy The city utility of St. Gallen has undertaken a 3-D seismic survey covering an area of 300 km2 of the city and surrounding communities with the intent to map the seismic stratigraphy, identify and map geological structures, and select well targets for their geothermal energy project. The total cost is estimated at CHF 12 million (US$ 14 million). Most other industrially sponsored research went to studies related to potential project sites. There are additional, minor industry-sponsored R&D activities in geophysical tool development. 20.9 Geothermal Education A large part of geothermal education in Switzerland continues to be managed by the Swiss Geothermal Association (www.goethermie.ch). Continuing education courses have been held at large numbers of universities and technical colleges in the German-, French- and Italian-speaking regions of Switzerland. The University of Neuchâtel has initiated a joint Master‘s program in Hydrology and Geothermal Energy and now offers university-level courses related to geothermal energy. 238
