19.3.2 DirectUse The current installed capacity for geothermal direct use in Spain is estimated at over 100 MWth, especially due to the great development of geothermal heat pumps in recent years. Shallow geothermal or low temperatures for heating and cooling are now a reality in Spain. Historically, open systems with heat pumps have been the most used; however, since 2000, closed systems are being applied and now heating plants for residential and tertiary sector buildings are increasingly being designed and built. Figure 19.8 Spanish shallow geothermal resources by local regions. The geothermal potential for low and very low temperatures in areas with potential consumers is estimated at more than 50,000 MWth. The target set in the PER 2011-2020 for use of geothermal heat was 50 ktoes by 2020, to be developed through direct thermal applications (air conditioning or spas networks) and applications with heat pumps for air conditioning and ACS in the residential and services.
