While national energy dependence is still significant, the positive impact that the intensification and synergy of the above policies in the areas of energy efficiency and renewables has had in improving our level of supply is unquestionable. Between 2005 and 2010, indigenous renewable resources experienced a major boost, with the increase in their share of domestic production of energy comparable to the fifteen preceding years. 19.1 Highlights for 2010 The year 2010 was marked by some highlights illustrating this context: Throughout this year continues to work within the framework convention between the Spanish Geological Survey (Instituto Geologico y Minero de España, IGME) and the Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy (IDEA) aimed at the implementation of a national inventory of geothermal potential and conducting outreach efforts for the promotion and development of geothermal energy in Spain. Within the framework of the Spanish Renewable Energy Plan 2011-2020, necessary studies are being conducted to complete this information and to have accessible a better assessment of the geothermal potential in Spain. At the end of December 2009, the Company Tecnología de Estudios de la Tierra (TRT) was awarded this study and in August 2010 they completed the work. Within the framework of the Spanish Renewable Energy Plan 2011-2020, seventeen in-depth studies are being conducted covering several aspects, including: technical, economic, social and environmental issues that have been essential to complete the information and to have at one‘s disposal a better assessment of renewable energies and about the geothermal potential in Spain. The studies are being carried out include: Strategic Environmental Assessment 2011-2020. Study of technological Evolution and prospective costs for technologies for 2020 - 2030. Evaluating the potential of geothermal energy in Spain Concerning the different types of geothermal activity, the main highlights are: Diffusion activities: Celebrate the Second Geothermal Energy Congress (GEOENER 2010) in Madrid GEOPLAT- in May 2010, the General Assembly of the Spanish Geothermal Energy Platform – GEOPLAT was celebrated. GEOPLAT aims to provide a framework within which all sectors involved in the development of geothermal energy, lead by the industry, work together in a coordinated way to ensure the commercial settlement of this renewable energy and its continuous growth, in a competitive and sustainable form. The document ―Vision for 2030‖ was completed and presented in 2010 and efforts were made to develop the associated Strategic Agenda.
