The contribution of Renewable Energy Sources to Primary Energy Consumption in 2010 reached 11%, as compared to 9% from 2009. Biomass, wind energy and hydro contributed 9.08%. Figure 19.2 below shows the contribution of RES to primary energy consumption- geothermal energy is extremely small compared to the other renewable energies. The generation of electricity with renewable energy sources has grown significantly during the period of 2005-2010. Figure 19.2 The Spanish contribution of RES to primary energy consumption in 2010. According to the actual production data, generation of electricity from renewable sources to gross electricity consumption in 2010, a high rainfall year, was 33.3% compared to a 17.9% contribution in 2004. Figure 19.3 shows the electricity production in 2010 by source and contribution of each to gross energy consumption in Spain. It can be seen that renewable energy production surpassed nuclear power, and is now first in importance, followed closely by natural gas and far outstripping the petroleum products and coal.
