15.8 Geothermal Education There have been regular geothermal courses in Seoul National University, both for undergraduate and graduate levels, since 2009. Public recognition of geothermal is increasing and there are special training courses for HVAC and architectural engineers to introduce general geothermal topics and state-of-the-art heat pump technologies, and to provide training in the design and installation of GHPs in the proper way. Also, there are many small seminars about general geothermal topics and geothermal power generation reflecting increasing public recognition. 15.9 International Cooperative Activities Major international cooperative activity of KIGAM is participating on the IEA-GIA ExCo and in Annex VIII and newly started Annex X. KIGAM also maintains research collaboration with the Institute for Geo-Resources and Environment (GREEN) of AIST, Japan, in geophysical exploration of geothermal resources and other geothermal related topics. The Korean Technology Center for Geothermal Energy (KORGE) was established in 2006, aiming at fostering geothermal utilization. KORGE opens the Accredited Installer Workshop in conjunction with International Ground Source Heat Pump Association (IGSHPA). 15.10 Future Outlook Geothermal utilization in terms of GHP installation will continue to rapidly increase for the next five years: 50-100 MWth annually. This is due to active subsidy programs and the special ―Mandatory Act‖. There are concerns for low performance or malfunctioning of GHP systems because the rapid increase of market may be accompanied by bad installation without proper design and performance validation. Long-term performance modeling and validation are another important task to keep GHP installations growing especially for large systems (bigger than 1 MWth capacity). The EGS pilot plant project may lead to initiating other R&D projects regarding geothermal power generation such as induced seismicity, hydraulic stimulation and binary power generation cycles. These will draw more attention from industry, which in turn would make the geothermal industry more active in the power generation business both domestically and overseas.
