11.9 International Cooperative Activities Orkustofnun is leading the ERA-NET for geothermal energy with various countries in Europe looking at synchronizing the work of institutions in Europe that decide on national plans and research activities in within each country. Orkustofnun will also be a donor programme partner for Hungary, Azores Islands in Portugal and possibly for Romania in the renewable energy programme area of the EEA grants. Iceland chairs the International Partnership for Geothermal Technologies (IPGT) this year and participates in all of the six working groups that IPGT has established: Lower Cost Drilling, Zonal Isolation/Packers, High Temperature Tools, Stimulation Procedures, Modeling and Exploration Technologies. Iceland is a member of IEA-GIA and leads the Annex VIII and Task E (Sustainability) of Annex I. It is a member of the International Geothermal Association with three Board Members. Iceland is also a Member of the World Energy Council, cooperates within the EU and is a partner of the Enhanced Geothermal Innovative Network for Europe (ENGINE) and HiTi, designing high temperature instruments for supercritical geothermal reservoirs which both are partly funded by the 6th EU Framework Programme and is part of the Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET-PLAN) of the EU. Orkustofnun hosts the UNU-GTP and ICEIDA is involved in stimulating geothermal utilization in developing countries. Iceland also founded, together with the US and New Zealand, a partnership aiming at solving unique energy problems small islands face in the EDIN program (Energy Development for Island Nations) with a pilot project in Dominica and possibly on the Azores. Iceland has a great deal of know-how and experience in the harnessing of geothermal sources, both for space heating and electricity generation.
