Snow melting on pavements and parking lots has been common in Iceland for the past 15-20 years and the total area covered is about 1,200,000 m2. There has been no increase in direct industrial uses of geothermal energy in Iceland during the last years and in 2004 the diatomite plant at Lake Myvatn closed down which consumed 444 TJ/yr. A seaweed processing plant at Reykhólar, W-Iceland, uses about 250 TJ/yr for drying. A plant for the commercial production of liquid CO2 has been in operation at Haedarendi in SW- Iceland since 1986. Geothermal water is also used for heating greenhouses and for small scale timber and fish drying. In Figure 12.6 direct use of geothermal energy is shown.
