Iceland is located on both a hotsport and the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, which runs right through it. This combined location means that geologically the island is extremely active. (Orkustofnun, 2011) 12.3 Current Status of Geothermal Energy Use in 2010 12.3.1 Electricity Generation As a result of a rapid expansion in the power intensive industry in Iceland the demand for electricity has increased considerably. This increase has partly been met by increased geothermal electricity generation. Total installed electric capacity of geothermal power plants was 575 MWe at the end of 2010. Electricity generation from geothermal power plants was 4,465 GWh in 2010 (see Figure 12.3). In the near future electricity generation is estimated to double as can be seen in Table 12.1.
