investigations were carried out for the proposed geothermal plant in April 2010, in the course of which the injection rate in one of the boreholes was gradually increased. At the same time, scientists checked seismic activity. The vibration velocities on the surface were well below the limits of 3 or 5 mm/s stipulated in DIN 4150. With the aim of distributing the underground water over a larger area and thus further minimising seismic activity, a second side track from one of the boreholes was drilled at about 2,500 m. The subsequent short-term hydraulic studies did not register any further seismicity. With a 4 to 5 MWe capacity, the Insheim geothermal power plant will be able to supply about 8,000 households with electricity. The option of creating a local heating network for the nearby towns and villages is currently being intensively considered.
