(Source: Deutsches GeoForschungsZentrum GFZ) 11.0 Introduction Germany has three regions that are particularly well placed to use geothermal energy: the North German Basin, the Upper Rhine Graben and the South German Molasse Basin. Each of these regions has characteristic features that pose different challenges for using geothermal heat. The main features of the thermal water in the North German Basin are its moderate flow rates and temperatures and in places very high salinity (salt levels), whereas the South German Molasse Basin has sometimes high flow rates, high temperatures and mostly low salinity. The heterogeneous geology and numerous fault zones of the Upper Rhine Graben make it more difficult to develop, but, on the other hand, its high temperatures and flow rates mean it has good, possibly even the best, conditions in Germany for commercial use of geothermal energy. Increasing the feed-in tariffs provided for by the Renewable Energy Sources Act for geothermal electricity in 2004 triggered a strong expansion of activities in the geothermal industry from 2005 onwards. Projects on generating geothermal electricity concentrated on the Molasse Basin near Munich and the northern Upper Rhine Graben. At the end of 2006, there were 80 projects working on producing deep geothermal electricity and heat; by the end of 2007, there were already 150 projects in different stages.
