The lifetime of a component is limited by the stresses applied to the component. This behavior was respected in Chapter 7 on the indirect cycle. The intermediate heat exchanger dimensions were redesigned to withstand the 20 MPa design pressure of the power cycle in the event of the rapid depressurization of the primary system. The intermediate heat exchangers were designed to employ alloy 800, which is currently a prime structural material for high temperature reactors. The mechanical properties reported in [Diehl and Bodmann, 1990] were used as allowable material stresses. The stress rupture strength (Figure 9.7) was used as the allowable design stress.
