CL can be used to make syngas, electricity and liquid fuels: methanol, synthetic crude, diesel, kerosene, naphta, and DME. Properties of CL are shown in Table 4.2.1. CL can be exported using intermodal transportation. The disadvantages of this approach are: • The prehydrolysis adds an extra conversion step of the bugwood, and • Up to 20% of the biomass is lost during the prehydrolysis step but used to extract furfural and process heat. Chipping: Bugwood is first harvested using conventional methods and transported using a small mobile truck or tractor short distances of up to 5 km to a chip compaction tractor. The chipping operations form 5 km cells, shown in Figure 4.2.2. No drying or debarking of the biomass is required in the field and branches can also be accommodated by the process.
