Theory VOLUME RATIO 17 For accurate analysis, it is desirable to know the actual volumetric expansion ratio as precisely as possible. From measurements made while the engine was disassembled, the areas of the male and female lobes were found to be 1.626 in2 and 1.303 in2 respectively. The increases in intake angles were also measured for the new port. By angle,the inlet volume was found to increase 4.75 in3 multiplying these by the appropriate function of the wrap over the 5.3 inlet volume.. Adding this number to the 5.3 volume yielded 18.76 i n3 manner the volumetric expansion was found to be 4.07. The exhaust volume was found by mltiplying the lobe areas by the rotor length. In this The above technique was dependent on the accuracy of measuring the wrap angle, the lobe areas and the accuracy of the given 5.3 inlet port volume. An alternate measurement was made by packing the inlet volume with clay and then carefully removing the clay and measuring its volume. This method, which substituted the inaccuracy of the 5.3 volume specification f yeilded a ratio of chosen.
