Theory 1 4 Leakage There are four paths along which leakage through the engine may occur. At the mesh line,leakage may pass between the rotors to the exhaust. Along the seal line between the rotor and the case,leakage may pass to the next chamber. Leakage also passes through the gap formed at the inter- section of the rotors and the case (figure 2). These last two paths also both lead to the next chamber. Leakage occurs continously through a l l four of these paths throughout the cycle. However,the method of calculating leakage only takes into account that leakage which occurs while the inlet port is open. Leakage flow rate was calc- ulated as the total flow rate minus the theoretical flow rate. The actual fXow rate of leakage from the expansion chambers is about three times this value. Leakage and loss, however, are two different things; only the leakage through the mesh line goes to the exhaust. Over 70 percent of the total leakage goes to the chamber of the next lower pressure and does work there. The area of the leakage paths I s a function of ro- tation angle, since the circumferential seal line changes length and since for some ranges of angle more than one inlet port is open.
