(1 TEST EQUIPMENT 6 The working fluid for the engine was a mixture of hot water and steam, as a synthetic geothermal steam. Steam a t any desired quality between ninty-nine percent and zero could be produced at pressures ranging from 120 psia to subatmospheric. Campus heating steam, supplied at 125 psia and 99 percent quality, was mixed with water heated by running steam through a heat exhanger. Before mixing, the mass flow rate of each fluid was measured by orifice plates. From this, quality was computed. Pressure was controled by thottling the steam and water lines upstream from the orifice plates. Flow rates were measured by square edge orifice plates using flange type pressure taps. Foxboro 13A differential pressure cells were used to convert the pressure drop to pressure signals between 3 - 15 psig. The pressure signals were sent to Foxboro M40G square root extractors. The square roots of the signals were multiplied by appropriate con- stants and sent as flow-rate signals to an Autodata Nine and to a Foxboro 13OM controller for steam and 130FCon- troller for water. The engine's output power ran through a 3 t o 1 reduction, via a flexfilebelt, to\a jack shaft and an eddy current brake.
