High leakage rates are an inherent difficulty with the design. The sealing of the expansion chamber is defined by the meshline between the two rotors, the circum- ference of the rotors against the case and by the high pressure ends of the rotors against the inlet plate. This complicated sealline resultsin a large area over which leakage may pass. The leakage fraction typically has been fifty percent of the total flow. There are several ways that the leakage fraction may be decreased. For instance,clearances may be decreased. Increasing engine speed is another way to reduce the leakage fraction. Problems are encountered with eitheroneof these approaches.
