Chapter 4: Li2S electrode Figure 4-30. Ex situ XRD patterns recorded on pre-charged Li2S electrodes (to 3.2 V and 3.6 V) in a coin cell configuration, at C/20. Electrodes were exactly the same as used for operando tests, thus of loading ~ 2.2 mgLi2S cm-2. Peaks of monoclinic β-Sulfur can be clearly noticed (black arrows). We do not, on the contrary to ESRF results, observe the peaks of Li2S anymore. In the case of ex situ experiments, the charge capacity was much higher as the one obtained in the pouch cell configuration (Figure 4-31), thus all Li2S material got oxidized and no traces were visible anymore. Figure 4-31. Initial charge voltage profile obtained from ex situ XRD (in coin cells), and compared with ESRF results obtained in situ in pouch cells. This XRD study allowed to confirm the proposed mechanism for initial charge of Li2S: if the initial charge capacity is relatively low (~ 60% of the theoretical value), an incomplete utilization of active material occurs. It is thus required to pay strong attention to the initial 147
