This project aims at studying novel cycles that use CO2 as a working fluid. The project is divided into two main applications based on the property of supercritical CO2, namely power cycle and refrigeration cycle.
In the power cycle part, possibilities and advantages of using supercritical CO2 as a working fluid in energy production by utilising different low-grade heat sources are investigated. The temperature file of supercritical CO2 and it is influence on the heat exchanger design and performances are discussed.
In the refrigeration part, the performance of CO2 as working fluid in heat pump applications is investigated. The temperature profile and its influence on heat exchanger performance are discussed. A commercial CO2 heat pump is tested and a 30 kW test rig with a CO2 heat pump has also been built in the lab to test the CO2 system performance as well as to provide information for the program simulating the system performance.
EES and TRANSYS are used for dynamic simulation of system performance as well as the heat exchanger performance. Refprop is used for achieving the working fluid properties.
